Stupid and Contagious Caprice Crane 9780446695725 Books

Caprice Crane's books read like extended episodes of a really good sitcom, which makes sense because Crane started out writing for TV. Crane's parents were both in the business - her mom was Ginger on "Gilligan's Island" - so the genre is obviously a good fit for her. Writing novels seems to work equally well, though.

Of all Crane's books, Stupid and Contagious is my favorite - quirky, fun and unexpected. Heaven Albright just got fired from her PR job and descends into a comic morass of neuroses and junk food. Her new neighbor, Brady Gilbert, is a minor-league music producer with a genius idea that'll be worth millions if only he can get someone at Starbucks corporate office to pay attention to him.

Crane's writing is full of pop culture and music references - I wish I listened to a Caprice Crane playlist while I read - and the humor is extra dry. The chapters alternate between Heaven and Brady's perspectives, and Crane does a great job getting in Brady's head. So many female romance/chick-lit authors write from what we all wish was a man's perspective, but Crane seems to really nail what this guy really is thinking, scary though it may be. The snappy dialogue and the honest interactions between Heaven and Brady come together to make this book a wickedly fun read.

Stupid and Contagious Caprice Crane 9780446695725 Books Reviews

I am not one to laugh out loud while reading, or even watching TV. I can chuckle, or nod, but hardly ever belly laugh. I laughed so hard reading this book that I blew snot bubbles. What really appealed to me was the author's use of pop culture references. Each section begins with lines from movies. I couldn't wait to get to the next section to see if I recognized the line and to see if I had seen the movie. After reading the book, I felt like I knew Heaven and Brady intimately and I deeply wished I really knew people like them. I can safely say that it was the most entertaining book I have ever read, and I will make it an annual event to read it.

This book will appeal to all ages. I hail from Generation X, but recommended the book to a 60 year old grandma who loved it just as much as I did. Do yourself a favor and make a date with Heaven and Brady.
Stupid and Contagious makes you wish the characters were real so they could spend the rest of their lives driving each other crazy. Also, a few more years of their heavy drinking and their habit of stuffing their faces with donuts, pancakes, double burgers, etc., would eventually bring results that might stop Heaven and Brady from looking down their noses at "fat" and "old" people they encounter.

That said, Crane is a talented writer with a sense of humor I appreciate. I have read Forget About It, which is a much better novel. I look forward to finding out what this author will do, and how she will choose to develop and grow when it comes to her storytelling, in the coming years.
I have had this book sitting on my shelf for a few months now. I kept passing it over thinking I was "over" reading books about 20 somethings looking for love, especially since I just hit 40. But I had nothing else to read so finally got around to it. Immediately, I was drawn in to the characters and the style of the book. I love the back and forth of the guy vs. girl perception of events. It has made me laugh out loud and there are not many books that do that. I think there are a lot of different circumstances in this book that many people can relate to. Mine was when Heaven was working in the restaurant. Going to look at this authors other books now!!!
I finished reading this book in one night. It was one of the few books that you couldn't put down.

I loved Heaven. The book was so funny, that it makes you actually laugh out loud or giggle while reading it.

Amazing book with light and cute characters. The writing is very clear, easy to read and descriptive. If you are one of those people that actually imagine yourself as one of the characters while reading a book - I STRONGLY recommend this book. You will love yourself being any character from Stupid and Contagious. It was so good that i actually narrated the whole book to my husband while dining out at a fancy restaurant. All I could talk about was this book that i had just finished reading and boy is it funny.

I want to be Caprice's best friend. Someone who can write like this, is definetely the type of friend that everyone needs in their lives.
"Stupid and Contagious" is a fun story about two 20-something neighbors in Manhattan who are both down on their luck. Heaven Albright was fired from her ulta-cool PR job and goes from planning book signings for Tommy Lee to waiting tables at a crappy restaurant. Brady Gilbert is an aspiring inventor/music producer who is desperately waiting for his big break. These two characters are polar opposites, and it's no surprise that their relationship is basically hate at first sight. However, it's also obvious that their mutual distaste for each other cannot last. When Heaven convinces Brady to let her accompany him on a trip to Seattle, the unlikely couple embarks on one hilarious adventure after another and eventually realizes that they already have everything they've ever wanted.

This book is incredibly predictable in places, and almost everything that happens to Heaven and Brady is completely unrealistic in every sense of the word. However, that's part of the fun! The characters in the story are all very likeable, especially crazy, quirky Heaven. The dialogue is clever and funny, and the quick pacing of the novel means there's never a dull moment for the reader. I also enjoyed all the various pop culture references the title of the book comes from a popular Nirvana song, which is awesome. Also, there's a part in the book when Heaven and her dog meet Ben Stiller, and it's absolutely hilarious!

If you're looking for something light and fun to read, "Stupid and Contagious" is definitely for you.
