The only thing better than an Amish novel by Shelley Shepard Gray is an Amish Mystery novel by Ms. Gray!

There is no waiting for the mystery to appear. With only an idyllic lead in, the body of Perry Borntrager is found by a group of teenage girls in the first few pages of the book. BOOM! Everyone is shocked, although somehow not surprised, that Perry met an early end to his life. Finding his body down an abandon well leads to many questions that the good people of Crittenden, KY, - Amish, Mennonite, and English, are reluctant to answer.

Local ex-Amish Mose Kramer is now the town’s sheriff. Investigating murder is not an every day event in Crittenden and Mose calls in his good friend, Detective Luke Reynolds to give him a hand. Luke, not familiar with the Amish ways, is frustrated at the little bit of information he is able to gather. Does everyone in this town hold secrets surrounding Perry? You won’t be disappointed in this well told story by bestselling author, Shelley Shephard Gray!

I am always searching for a good read. Dystopian and Amish Fiction are my favorites. Yeah I know, kind of the exact opposite, but I think they balance each other and me! This book was super and definitely in my keep pile. Thanks........
this book peaked my interest in wanting to read books with values and ethics. it gave insight into the Amish lifestyle and how things work together for people of faith. I would recommend this to anyone wanting "a breath of fresh air" in reading. I received the book in a timely manner.
I have read a few of Shelley Shepard Gray's series (mostly trilogies) and have yet to read a bad one. She writes Amish-theme books and manages to make each story heroine unlike the others and each story unlike the others. That is not always the case with some authors . That is why I never hesitate to get any book Shelley writes.
A body found. Amish Perry was murdered. Who did it? Former girlfriend, Lydia, gets some shocking news about her life. Englisher, Walker, worked with Perry and didn't like him much at the end. Note that this murder is not solved in this book.
My mom was very happy to find these books. She loves this series.
I don't like writing negative reviews, but this book was a disappointment. The writer was obviously attempting to create a murder mystery but there wasn't much about the storyline that I found to be mysterious. After a murder was discovered, there were very few clues given and none of the characters were viable suspects... throughout the entire book! I believe the author's goal was to generate interest and intrigue so one would buy the sequel. However, my interest wasn't piqued and I won't buy the sequel. I didn't feel that the author developed her characters to the point of making the reader care about them, their situations, their feelings, or the outcomes of their lives and dilemmas.

There was much repetition throughout this book. For example, whenever several of the characters found themselves in stressful situations, they would bite their lower lips. There was way too much lip biting by way too many people and I found it distracting and annoying. Whenever I encounter this, I always question why the author did it and why their editors don't catch and correct it.

This book was rather slow and juvenile and at no point during the reading of it did it become a page-turner, as a good mystery should be.
I think it must be me here of late ... I seem to be disappointed in the books I am reading. Shelley Shepard Gray is one of my very favorite authors since she started publishing and darn it all this was not my very favorite book of hers ... but I did like it! I think the issues I had with it was that 1) it was a continuation book .. now some I don't have as much trouble with as others but nothing really came to a conclusion here ... don't know who killed Perry, not 100% sure where Lydia and Walker's relationship is going, I do hope that we find out more in the next book of this trilogy ... so that frustrated me a bit as well. Having so many problems as they all did was difficult on me too... isn't anyone happy these days? It seems that these Amish fictional romance books that I have always loved are now getting so dark and that disappoints me a lot. I would just like to see some happiness weaved throughout them. Life is full of ups and downs .. where are the ups in these darn books here of late?

Now, for the upside of this book for me ... I really did find I cared and liked Lydia and Walker. I felt sorry for Lydia through part of the book ... she had a load to carry that she didn't understand and the people she trusted most were all of a sudden shaky in her own mind .. that had to be hard. I could understand how she felt in that situation. Walker, I felt was basically a nice college young man that hits situations that get confusing for one that age from time-to-time but manages to stay strong to who he is. I admired that in this book as well. The Detective Luke, was interesting in the fact that although he wasn't sure he wanted to be there ... as a friend to Luke, who felt he is too close to the Amish community to do the investigation ... he continues to plug along ... and I think basically he is a typical overworked, cynical cop in today's world ... unfortunately. The time away from our "Englishers" rat race will probably do him some good.

I know will be purchasing "The Search" obviously I have to find out how this darn thing continues ... and as I have previously read everything else she has ever written I am not going to stop now... and as I said I really did "like it" just wish there had been a bit more happiness tossed into the mix. But again this is only one person's opinion and in this case it would not stop me from reading the book. It also would not probably have bothered me at all if the last book I hadn't read was not so terribly depressing from start to finish!
