The City in the Stars The Tom Swift Series #1 Victor Appleton 9780671411206 Books Reviews

I read these back in the early 80's when I took Evelyn Wood Speed Reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed them. By the end of the training I was seeing pictures and no longer words. This made it even more fun as I was watching a movie!

During the training sessions we had to share our material with a person next to us. I told a man next to me and he asked if he could borrow the book when I was done.

I want to redo the training and want to use these books. I would like to know what age bracket they are intended for so I can buy others in the same age group.
Anyone know?
This particular incarnation of the Tom Swift series is a great place for young boys to discover science fiction. The stories are entertaining and do a good job of holding one's attention, plus the author attempts (with varied success) to weave in actual science here and there. I say the books are good for young boys because the protagonist is of course Tom Swift, and the format the adventure-story favored by many young boys, but the character Anita does offer a strong (but almost tomboyish) female role as well.
In this story--the first in the series--Tom's spacecraft has an engine accident. When similar problems plague an engine being developed by Tom's father's company for an upcoming mission to Jupiter, Tom must discover who is out to sabotage Swift Enterprises before their actions lead to thousands of deaths.
Though two more (1991-1993, 2006-2007) followed, this should be seen as chronologically THE FINAL SWIFT SERIES.

Set completely in deep space only Mr. Swift returns with son Tom (one would like to think Clown Chow and Boor Bud of the original 1954-1971 Tom Jr. series were dropped down black hole but Chow would likely plugged it up, imploded the universe). INSTEAD of Sandy or Phyllis there was beautiful crew member Anita Thorwald. She was at Tom's side through the 11 of the 1981-1984 series, always in the thick of the action, even taken prisoner with him, #4 War in Outer Space, #5 The Astral Fortress, #10 Invisible Force. She had a notable, dramatic, scene in #9 Gateway of Doom as she praised a scientist, then slowly realizing the real--evil--truth about him.

Anita was THE ONE TRUE FEMALE CO-STAR OF THE CENTURY ON-AND-OFF (1910-2007) SWIFT FATHER-THEN-SON SAGA, more important in any ONE of this series than Mary Nestor, Phyllis Newton and, Yolanda Aponte were in almost 80 stories COMBINED. And she made it TO THE END while Sandy Swift and Mandy Coster, the only to be closest to her in significance, sadly faltered, faded out..

There was, unfortunately, though, just ONE problem about Anita--

IT WAS HER!

She was a disagreeable, downright dislikable, character (Tom "barely had time to duck as the volatile redhead swung at him with her left hand, growling, 'Watch it, buster!'" #2 Terror on the Moons of Jupiter--imagine Phyllis doing THAT). She was bit tomboyish, with science
background a little older to have ever been girlfriend like Phyllis. Further off-putting she had freak computerized artificial leg, empathic weirdness-- as Phyllis would have said, "GOLLY!"

(Part of a series, see reviews Tom Swift Megapack, Mary Nestor; Tom Swift and His Flying Lab, Sandy Swift and Phyllis Newton; Black Dragon, Mandy Coster; Into the Abyss, Yolanda Aponte.)
