Having thoroughly enjoyed three other offerings in the Inspector Lynley series I had all I could do to wade through this quagmire to conclusion. In fact, I did bail following the result on the criminal aspect was made boringly clear, leaving unfinished the resolution of the myriad of personal matters that really seemed the driving force to the story. In truth I would regard it closer to a gothic love story than a crime novel. I give it two stars only because, as usual, Ms. George's prose is well crafted, but this effort will terminate my interest in the Lynley saga.

Accordingly I have little to add except to say that the first death/murder, does not take place until the 24% range, the second around 44% and a third incident well into the 60's. Hardly riveting or nail biting as, in between, we are lulled into tedium by being exposed, at great length, to extended family issues that do not embellish or enrich our knowledge of the core characters except to make them less professionally competent, and less noble. For that matter, Havers is virtually non-existent and is not teamed with Lynley in her brief appearance. And most vexing was the manner in which civilians played an active roll in what little police work was under review - totally out of previous character and well beyond any reasonable expectations of how Scotland Yard operatives would conduct their business.

A Suitable Vengeance Inspector Lynley Elizabeth George 9780553384826 Books Reviews

I much prefer the tried and true formula of the Inspector Lynley books where there is a murder somewhere and he and Havers, bless her untidy heart, work together to solve it. I did enjoy the background story of Lynley, St. James, Deborah and Helen but it just took up too much of the book. Throw in the disgusting drug addict relatives and the adulterous mother and you might as well be reading a novel. The mystery was all over the place and when the book finally limped to an end you weren't quite sure who did what and why. I do like my characters to be at least somewhat likeable. Most of these you just want to slap most of the time. Big mistake to leave out Havers and throw in all the unpleasant relatives. I'm afraid I just don't recommend this book.
It was actually hard to believe that Elizabeth George wrote this book herself - except for her excellent command of the english language and it use. The book is too drawn out, and tedious as reported by other reviewers. Save yourself time and money and take the book out at your local library and quickly skim it. The only interesting things are Tommy's, Deborah's, Simon's and Helen's
relationship development. Also Tommy's relationship with his mother which explains much going forward with George's series.
I've read at least 11 of her books, enjoying them all, but this was pretty much a waste of time.
I always enjoy Elizabeth George's novels. I like the continuity, the characters she shows us, the intertwined lives they lead. They are a 'family', and there is a certain voyeuristic empathy readers naturally feel when watching scenes unfold. The stories are always well wrought, the police work convincing ... and, how can anyone realistically 'criticize' such an eminent author?
I do, however, think of 'old sepia-toned photos' needing touch up. The tragedy of Lynley losing his wife was a dramatic turning point in the series, but it is done with. What will George have to do next to shock us?
I think there is real danger for any author in overworking a character, with too much repetition, with using the same old camera lens.
There are detective series that seem to have more persuasive background parameters; Ian Rankin's Rebus for example. I may be out of sync in suggesting this, but I believe Rebus has more appeal now than Lynley. Or, maybe it's just those presumed 'aristocratic values' that are beginning to annoy.
Sorry, Elizabeth, but I think you need to change direction. Otherwise you run the risk of your characters getting stuck as mere Downton Abbey stand ins.
Elizabeth George is a masterful writer who can weave many characters into a book filled with intrigue. This book finds a man, married w/ child, to be a womanizer and a fraud. When he is found murdered on Thomas Lynley’s estate at the time of a party given by his mother, it is discovered that Thomas’ brother Peter, a drug addict, had been buying drugs from the murdered man and may be a suspect. Another murder/suicide occurs and more possible suspects are involved. And when the murdered man is discovered to be a cross-dresser, all bets are off. This is another great book and part of a TV series by Ms. George.
Although this is not the first book in the series, it takes place first in time, and as other reviewers have mentioned, does give background to Lynley's, Simon's Deborah's, and Helen's relationship and helps to explain some of the tensions between them in the first book. I would recommend this book to anyone reading the Lynley series for insight into the relationship of the main characters. For example, in this book, Lynley and Deborah are engaged to be married, but both Deborah and Simon are suffering with what each of them thinks is unrequited love. Barbara Havers is in this book only incidentally but it was nice to see her surface (albeit briefly) in her usual role of opposition to anything gentry. "A Suitable Vengeance" is a good story, but I gave it 4 stars because it dragged a bit in my opinion. While the story does have an engaging murder, I felt the tale was more focused on the four main characters. Some reviews said that the characters were "too into themselves". I can see where those reviewers are coming from, and I agree that sometimes some of them were a little whiney or too self-flagellating, I think the reason is because this book seemed, to me, intended to be more about the main characters and the development of their relationships than the story if a murder. Still a "must-read" for any fan of the Lynley series.
